Derek Redican.

I am an Irish artist working across portraiture, painting, drawing, and conceptual AI-generated imagery.

I studied art formally, but most of my education happened elsewhere — in Dublin, London, Frankfurt, Bangkok, Jeddah, Jakarta, and Singapore. I lived in places where the atmosphere could change overnight. I have worked through military coups, left cities just before unrest turned violent, and found myself close to histories that were still unfolding.

Those experiences didn’t make me an adventurer. They made me pay attention.
My work is rooted in the human face — not as decoration, but as evidence. I’m drawn to expressions that carry pressure: authority, fear, exhaustion, resilience. Portraiture, for me, is not about perfect likeness. It is about presence. I work in oil, acrylic, watercolour and pencil, alongside AI-based processes that allow me to explore distortion, symbolism, and modern myth. AI is not a novelty. It is simply another tool — one that reflects the synthetic, unstable world we now live in.

In 2024, I was named among LinkedIn’s Top 100 AI Artists, and my portrait of Michael Collins was formally presented to the Irish Defence Forces, where it now forms part of their collection. I am currently based in Spain, continuing to build work shaped by memory, tension, and the quiet sense that beneath civilisation, something is always burning.
